Course description

This course prepares you for the ABRSM Level 1 Award in Music Theory (Grade 2) exam and associated qualification.

In this course, you will continue to learn the fundamentals of music theory. You will be introduced to more simple time signatures, triplets and triplet note groups with rests, the extension of the stave up to two ledger lines, relative major and minor keys, construction of the harmonic minor scale and some more scales and key signatures. You will also become familiar with more terms and signs in common use.

Lessons

This course contains 10 lessons. It is estimated that the total time to complete this course is 1 month at 3 hours per week.
1.   Introduction to the course
2.   Ledger lines, notes in the treble and bass clefs
3.   Time signatures, rhythms in different metres
4.   Triplets and dotted rests
5.   Grouping notes and rests
6.   Keys and scales: A, B and E major
7.   Relative majors & minors, the harmonic minor scale
8.   Intervals in A, B and E major and A, E and D minor
9.   Tonic triads in A, E and D minor and A, B and E major
10.   Common terms and signs

It is helpful if you have studied our ABRSM Grade 1 Music Theory course prior to starting this course, as this course builds on topics introduced in grade 1.
